Sefar: A Journey into the Prehistory of the Sahara
Sefar is one of the most fascinating archaeological areas of the Tassili n’Ajjer.
The region is famous for its prehistoric rock art, sandstone shelters, natural corridors and ancient settlements. The paintings and engravings provide a remarkable insight into the people, animals and environments that once existed in the Sahara.
Reaching Sefar is not a conventional desert tour. The heart of the Tassili is explored on foot, far from roads and modern infrastructure.
This is a true desert expedition for travelers who want to walk, explore and experience the Sahara at a slower pace.
The Tassili n’Ajjer Plateau
The Tassili n’Ajjer is a vast sandstone landscape shaped by wind and erosion over thousands of years.

Every day brings a different landscape and a new part of the Tassili to discover.
A Genuine Tuareg Trekking Experience
The journey is organized and accompanied by our local Tuareg team from Djanet.
Experienced guides lead the trek while a mule and donkey caravan carries the camping equipment, food and luggage.
This allows travelers to focus on walking, discovering the landscapes and visiting the prehistoric sites without carrying heavy equipment.
At night, we set up camp in the desert. After a long day of walking, there is time to enjoy traditional meals, tea, conversation and, when possible, Tuareg music beneath the stars.
Sefar Trek: Physical Difficulty
The Sefar trek requires a good level of physical fitness.
This is a genuine walking expedition. Depending on the itinerary and terrain, some days involve several hours of walking over rocky and uneven ground.
There are no roads leading directly to the main archaeological sites of the Tassili plateau.
The pace can be adapted to the group when conditions allow, but travelers should be comfortable with long walks and changing desert terrain.
For a deeper exploration of Sefar and the surrounding areas, we recommend planning at least 8 days.
Day 1 – Tafeloulet to Tamrit
The trek begins at Tafeloulet, at the entrance to the Tassili n’Ajjer plateau.
We start the ascent through the spectacular Agba Tafeloulet pass, following a canyon surrounded by impressive sandstone cliffs.
As we reach the plateau, the landscape opens toward the vast dunes of Erg Admer.
We continue across the Tassili plateau toward Tamrit, famous for its ancient cypress trees and prehistoric rock art.

Day 2 – Tamrit to In Etinen
After breakfast, we continue walking across the Tassili plateau.
The route passes through sandstone formations, ancient valleys and landscapes shaped by wind and erosion.
We reach In Etinen, where we take a break before continuing our exploration of the surrounding archaeological areas.
The afternoon is dedicated to discovering prehistoric rock art and sandstone formations around In Etinen and In Aouan.

Day 3 – In Etinen to Sefar
Today we continue toward Sefar.
The route takes us through spectacular sandstone corridors and ancient rock shelters, including Tin Zoumaytak, known for its prehistoric paintings.
We gradually enter the extraordinary landscape of Sefar, where natural rock formations, shelters and ancient human traces create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the Sahara.
We spend the night in the Sefar area.
Day 4 – Exploring Sefar
Today is dedicated to exploring Sefar.
We walk through sandstone formations, natural passages and ancient rock shelters while discovering prehistoric paintings and engravings.
The rock art includes human figures, animals and scenes reflecting the lives and beliefs of ancient Saharan communities.
This is one of the most important days of the trek and an opportunity to take time to observe and photograph the landscape and archaeological sites.

Day 5 – Sefar to Tisswar
After breakfast, we leave the remarkable landscapes of Sefar and continue our trek through the vast sandstone formations of the Tassili n’Ajjer.
The route leads through ancient valleys, natural passages and spectacular rock formations shaped by wind and erosion. Along the way, we discover further traces of prehistoric human presence and enjoy the silence and isolation of this extraordinary landscape.
By the end of the day, we reach Tisswar, where we set up our desert bivouac and spend the night beneath the stars.
Day 6 – Tisswar to Alagh Ndmen
The trek continues through the vast sandstone landscapes of the Tassili n’Ajjer.
The silence and isolation of this region make the journey particularly special.
We discover more rock formations and traces of prehistoric human occupation before reaching Alagh Ndmen.

Day 7 – Alagh Ndmen to Ijabaren
Today's hike leads toward Ijabaren, one of the remarkable prehistoric rock-art areas of the Tassili n’Ajjer.
The surrounding cliffs and shelters contain paintings representing human figures, animals, pastoral scenes and ceremonies.
Our Tuareg guides help travelers discover the sites while respecting the fragile archaeological heritage of the region.

Day 8 – Ijabaren to Djanet
After breakfast, we begin the descent from the Tassili plateau.
We return toward Djanet after several days of walking through one of the most remote and fascinating landscapes of the Algerian Sahara.
Depending on the flight schedule, there may be time to rest, shower and visit Djanet before the transfer to the airport.
Your Sefar adventure ends with memories of ancient rock art, sandstone landscapes, Tuareg hospitality and the immense silence of the Tassili.
