Discover Tadrart Rouge on a 7-day desert tour from Djanet, Algeria. Travel through the spectacular landscapes of Tassili n’Ajjer, with its red sand dunes, towering sandstone arches, winding canyons and ancient rock art sites.

Where Is Tadrart Rouge?
Tadrart Rouge lies in southeastern Algeria, near Djanet, within the Tassili n’Ajjer region. Its vast dunes, rocky plateaus and sandstone formations create one of the Sahara’s most distinctive landscapes.
From Djanet, our local Tuareg team takes you into the desert by 4x4 to explore remarkable places such as El Berdj, Moul N’Aga, Tin Merzouga and the surrounding desert canyons.
Tadrart Rouge Tour Itinerary: 7 Days in the Algerian Sahara
Day 1: Djanet Visit and Drive to Oued El Berdj
After breakfast, enjoy a short visit to Djanet, lasting around two hours. Discover the Tassili n’Ajjer National Museum, then explore the local market and experience the atmosphere of the town and everyday life.
We then set off by 4x4 towards Tadrart Rouge, travelling through the remarkable landscapes of the Algerian Sahara. After lunch along the way, we continue to Oued El Berdj, where we set up our first desert camp.
In the evening, enjoy dinner prepared by our cook and spend the night beneath the stars.
Day 2: Oued El Berdj – Tébarkat El Berdj – Moul N’Aga
In the morning, explore the impressive Oued El Berdj canyon, with its towering cliffs, caves and rock shelters decorated with ancient paintings and engravings depicting elephants, giraffes and cattle. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife and bird species.
After lunch at Tébarkat El Berdj, continue towards the magnificent dunes of Moul N’Aga, surrounded by sandstone towers shaped by erosion.
Enjoy some free time to explore on foot and watch the sunset over the dunes.
Set up camp among the dunes when conditions permit, or beneath the cliffs if the wind requires a more sheltered location. Dinner and overnight in the desert.
Day 3: Moul N’Aga – Tamezguida – In Djaren – Wan Zawatan
After breakfast, leave Moul N’Aga and head towards Tamezguida, known for its natural arches and impressive sandstone formations.
Continue to In Djaren, an area renowned for its rock-art sites, which bear witness to ancient human presence in the Sahara.
Travel onwards through the wild landscapes of Tadrart Rouge to Wan Zawatan. Set up camp in the late afternoon, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in the desert.
Day 4: Wan Zawatan – In Tehak – Tin Merzouga
Leave Wan Zawatan and travel towards In Tehak, discovering the spectacular landscapes of Tadrart Rouge along the way.
Explore sandstone formations and natural arches, with opportunities to get out of the vehicle and walk around the sites at your own pace.
After lunch along the route, continue to Tin Merzouga, famous for its vast dune basin and towering dunes in shades of red and orange.
Spend time exploring this iconic landscape and, towards the end of the day, climb the dunes to admire the sunset.
Set up camp at Tin Merzouga, followed by dinner and a night in the desert.
Day 5: Tin Merzouga – Ouan N’Aguen – Bouhadian – Wan Ahar
Leave Tin Merzouga and explore Ouan N’Aguen, followed by Bouhadian, where striking rock formations and ancient rock-art sites reveal traces of the Sahara’s distant past.
Make stops along the way to explore the sites and observe prehistoric paintings and engravings.
After lunch, continue to Wan Ahar, where we set up camp. Enjoy dinner and spend the night beneath the starry sky of Tadrart Rouge.
Day 6: Wan Ahar – Tissetka
After breakfast, leave Wan Ahar and head towards Tissetka, an area known for its canyons, dramatic rock formations and numerous rock-art sites.
Explore the canyons and discover ancient engravings that provide a glimpse into life in the Sahara when its environment was very different from today.
Set up camp in the late afternoon, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in the heart of the desert.
Day 7: Tissetka – Adjalati – Teghitit – Tegharghat – Djanet
Leave Tissetka and head towards Adjalati, known for its expanses of black sand, which contrast strikingly with the surrounding landscapes.
Continue to Teghitit to discover rock engravings that form part of the rich prehistoric heritage of Tassili n’Ajjer.
The final stop is Tegharghat, famous for the remarkable rock engraving known as the Crying Cow.
Return to Djanet, followed by a transfer to your hotel or the airport, depending on your flight schedule.
