Sebiba Festival in Djanet
To the rhythm of gangas and youyous, the Sebiba Festival welcomes you to Djanet with its songs, dances, and takouba wrestling. A unique experience, fully immersed in the oasis's inhabitants.
Inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Sebiba Festival is a traditional Tuareg ceremony held in Djanet, according to the Muslim lunar calendar, from the beginning of Muharram until Ashura. Its origins are linked to an ancient story of reconciliation between two tribes of the Tassili n'Ajjer following a period of conflict. Today, Sebiba is a powerful symbol of peace, unity and harmony between the Oraren and Traor'fitt communities.
For 10 days, the Sebiba rituals and ceremonies are practiced by the inhabitants of El Mihân and Zallouaz, two historic neighborhoods of Djanet. Dancers and singers take part in the Timulawine competition, while men face each other in traditional displays of strength and skill, holding a sword in one hand and a headscarf in the other as symbols of confrontation and peace. The women surround the warriors, singing to the rhythms of the gangas (traditional tambourines) and ululating to energize the performers.
At the end of the competition, the victorious warriors take part in the Sebiba ritual the following day. Passed down through generations, these traditions offer visitors a unique opportunity to discover traditional Tuareg clothing, jewelry, headdresses, weapons and musical instruments, many of which are crafted and preserved by local artisans.
